A Publication of San Francisco Collaborating Agencies Responding to Disaster. THE DISASTER FILES SF CARD’s In Response Newsletter Issue #12 - August 2002
What’s Shaking - SFCARD News
We are delighted to announce that the United Way has awarded funding to SFCARD through the regional CARD group. We are very grateful to the United Way for it’s continued support which will see us through another year. The funding provides us with the opportunity to continue to develop our programming as well as the time to find sources of future funding. Please let me know if you have any ideas! Over 40 agencies joined us on April 10th for our last General Meeting: Emergency Plan Development. We discussed issues that faced CBOs in New York after 9/11 and reviewed our new emergency planning binder to help agencies to begin thinking about their own plans.
Upcoming Events On Tuesday, August 6th, we will have our second SFCARD Steering Committee retreat this year. We will be using this time to develop our programs and plans from the last retreat and look at ways to raise the profile of SFCARD so that we can be even more effective in preparing our community for disaster. Kicking off in October is the newest SFCARD program - “The Information Exchange”. Join us for the first of a six part lecture and discussion series where we explore issues such as planning for vulnerable populations, mental health and so on. Each of these lectures is tailored specifically for organizations in San Francisco. Keep an eye on our website for further details! www.sfcard.org Fleet Week is on!!! Visit the 3rd annual Safety Fair on October 12-13th at the Marina Green from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. Contact JoAnn Scordino for details: (415)558-2703
Notice Board Do you have an announcement or a safety tip that you would like us to share? Let us know and we’ll be sure to include it in our next issue! Email your notice to San Francisco CARD and write “Notice Board” in the subject line.
Trainings this Month
SFCARD began work with two agencies this month: The Jamestown Community Center is a non-profit in the Mission that provides after school courses for over 170 children per day. The Rhoda Goldman Plaza is an assisted living community and will be working with SFCARD and the Mayor’s Office of Emergency Services on a variety of disaster planning activities.
Editorial
Dear Readers, For those of you who do not yet know me, I am the new Program Coordinator of SFCARD. On July 1st I finished my contract with the SF Mayor’s Office of Emergency Services and began my work with SFCARD. Since then, I have trained two agencies in SF and am in the process of setting up some new programs that I hope will allow us to reach more of our community and help to prepare as many people as possible for disaster. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the incredible and outstanding Executive Committee for their support and I look forward to working with all of you in the near future.
